A Part or Apart? Disability and Inclusion in the Faith Community Photographs and Discussion Materials by Jane Strauss

A Part or Apart?

Contents and Concept

The images upon which these books are based all were captured in the Jewish community in a particular locale and moment in time. Disability is no respecter of belief, so the additional materials provided in this Discussion Guide span the three major faith communities in the United States – Jewish, Christian, and Muslim. I have researched the materials with the assistance of members of all three communities, because I strongly believe that the images presented here speak to, and will be useful for, a wide range of institutions and organizations, not just those following Jewish life pathways. I have attempted to provide enough materials that the coordinator/leader may pick and choose those most appropriate to their situation, or perhaps use them all, as an additional means of teaching participants about diversity as represented in the 21st Century.

"How I wish every religious leader in the world had

this book in their hand to understand how very

important including each of these precious souls is."

"Never tooting her own horn, Ms Strauss has singlehandedly done more for INCLUSION in the religious and disability communities than any person I have ever known. Her book "A Part or Apart?"invites loving, compassionate and frank communication; as well as helps us to see that each of us can and should be more, do more and help more in enabling INCLUSION. Personal in the way only a mother's eye can  know, she willingly shares her vision with us. Read and see."

"....informative, insightful, eye opening, sad and hopeful. As a Jew- who was always bothered by the 'designer lifestyle' standards in our synagogue-I could really relate on a very personal level to--particularly the very heartfelt letter that you wrote. As a mother of a son with Aspergers, I share in the pain and confusion  of alienation due to (my child's) disabilities. Thank you Jane for  this very important contribution. Also....the photos are fabulous!"
